My sweet grandmother, my Nanny, has always signed her letters, cards, and emails with x’s and o’s.

It’s a tradition that now runs in my family. After every written exchange, you can always expect those two sweet little letters.

Eventually, I got a tattoo to represent this tradition. Little did I know that the tattoo wouldn’t turn out how I wanted (don’t ask) and it had to be covered up one year later.

The tiny, red xoxo was overtaken by an unbloomed, red rose. Nanny’s name is Rosie. The rose sits above the words like the wind. On her 60th wedding anniversary to my grandfather, Poppy, I said to him, “I bet time flew by so fast”. 

He lovingly replied, “Oh honey, like the wind”.

Though the rose on my arm remains unbloomed, I’ve made it a point to bloom for it and for the story it reminds me of daily.
